Checkers Inn Backpackers, Little India, Singapore

Prior to having our vacation in Singapore, I searched the internet for a backpacker place to stay at as I want to try a new place. Singapore is notably expensive so I need to scout for the best price and a comfortable to place to have a good night's sleep at the end of the day. One that doesn't compromise the quality of our stay. It took me a month to find the one that fits our need and of course one that is budget friendly. And most importantly is a one place that has no bedbugs. The one I stayed on my previous visits had bedbugs which eventually deprived me of a good night's sleep, left me with quite a number of bites not to mention the bite scars it left on me.

I found this Checkers Inn Backpackers online. At the time, the place and website were still under construction but was already marketing their place. They have a separate male dorm, mixed dorm (male and female) and the female dorm. I booked the 6 Single Bed Female Dormitory online 3 weeks before our scheduled trip. Since this is a new place, I am crossing my fingers of their claim of no bed bugs .

The online published rate was different from the walk-in rate which was only at 22$SG.

I paid half of the total price and the balance when we checked in. There was a 20$SG deposit each for lockers and the electronic key but was refunded on our check out. (Prices may have changed from the time we booked our stay)
Checkers Inn is located in Little India.

I love the interior of this backpacker's place.

This is the entrance of 6 Female Dormitory.
  1. This is the entrance to the bathroom, pressing room and the backdoor.
One reason why I chose this backpacker is because it's new and with laundry facilities (at the ground floor) and the pressing facility inside the room itself.

The washroom, bathroom and toilet.
It's really clean. I just hope not because it's new that's why it's clean and well kept.
Of course, the backpackers who stayed were responsible of their own trash. The housekeeper gets the trash daily and keeps the room tidy.

The toilet. Just glad tissue was always available as we were 6 staying at that time. One was a patron who works in Singapore. Another one, a Filipina who stayed for sometime, a Malaysian and an Indonesia for an overnight stay.

The locker.

We were preparing our stuff at around 8 am. Though was tired from our previous trip to LEGOLAND and Hello Kitty in Malaysia, we need to pack our things and check out before we head to our last day of adventure. The ladies in the dorm were still sleeping.
This is one of the lounge where the free internet is.
Breakfast of toast and coffee are available every morning. You can also do light cooking like fried eggs and heating your food.

The internet, pantry and the entertainment area.

We left our things on our check out at their secured luggage room to see more of Singapore then picked up our things in the evening before heading to the airport
I love this concept of hammock. This is my favorite place to hang out in the evening after a long day's walk and escapade before going up to our room.
I'd like to call this the visitors' wall. The lady at the reception took a picture of us on our check out to be included on the wall.

The instapic was still processing that's why it's a little bit blurry when I took a snap of it. But it's ok, I know this is us ;-). We are now a certified Checkers Inn Backpackers visitors.

Overall, the concept, interior design, choice of furniture and fixtures, the colors and the cleanliness of the place is just - superb. The aircon is cool enough to lull you to sleep. Since they have it noted on the website to advice them if you arrive late as reception area will be closed at 11:00 pm. I sent them an email to inform of our arrival schedule and true their words, someone waited for us to arrange our check in and our beddings.

My only concern were that even though the customer service attendants or reception personnel were helpful to us, they didn't wear a smile which is a must if you are on the front desk. It's a bit awkward to deal with someone you feel not friendly.

It's a 15 minutes walk to Little India train station which is quite a walk when you are already tired from a whole day of wandering and sightseeing. But then again, as what I have said earlier, everything else met my expectations. And NO bedbugs.

My budget for our 4 days travel and tour (two persons) includes our plane fare  (Cebu Pacific sale seat advance booking), Checkers Inn backpackers, Universal Studios Singapore, SEA Aquarium, Indonesia tour - LEGOLAND tickets, Hello Kitty tickets, Indonesia one day tour, shopping of souvenirs and house decors, food and train/taxi fare was
80,000 pesos.

I hope that I am able to give you an idea and benchmark on your trip to Singapore and maybe side trips to Malaysia and Indonesia.

Thank you for visiting my blog.

Bugis Street, Singapore

Bugis street is the largest street shopping location in Singapore. Here you can find a vast array of quality merchandise at an affordable price like trendy clothes, fashion accessories, gadgets and delicious food.

We were at Bugis street in the afternoon. Lots of people were roaming around the place.

This was my second visit to Bugis and my first visit was in 2012. It was in the evening and too many people too for their last minute shopping before going back to their place just like what we did that time. Irregardless of time and day, I guess Bugis is always full of tourists and shoppers.

As we went inside the shops, we were already engrossed in choosing what to buy for "pasalubong" (souvenirs) and haggling for the best price. My daughter was so excited that she almost want to buy everything there is.

Had our lunch in one of the food courts in Bugis.

Fortune telling is a business you can find in every country. I wanted to try what this fortune teller would have to tell me about my fortune but I decided to go on shopping spree instead and just read my horoscope online - for free.

To cool us a bit, we bought the ice cream sandwich this guy was selling.

We witnessed the performance of this gypsy lady performing her craft. She was with a male companion but did not wait for the guy to peform.
There was a tip box for whoever wants to give a penny or two.

Krystal and I were having a coffee break at Starbucks but unfortunately was not able to take a pic of the coffee shop and instead I was busy taking shots of what's around us.

We went inside the Bugis junction and were able to buy few accessories.

Thank you for dropping by.

Batam Miniature House - Batam, Indonesia

Part of the one day Batam, Indonesia tour I booked was a visit to the Miniature House which showcased 33 miniature houses depicting the different provinces of Indonesia. We arrived at the Park between 12 noon to 1:00 pm so expect the heat of the sun to be at its peak. Whew! really so hot and sweat was dripping like water. We did not stay long at the park because of the heat and stayed for only less than an hour.

With no further ado - let's see the beauty of the miniature houses of Indonesia.

These are Krystal's shots.

My shots.
